II Corinthians 4:5-7

"For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, Who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."

"Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted?..." Matthew 5:13

Salt is the seasoning. It is also a preservative. Seasoning is used to make certain foods more palatable. When used as a preservative (for certain foods), it prevents decomposition. Such is the substance of the teachings of Jesus Christ. When once we have grasped His message of life, when we have probed its depths and heights, and scanned its far-flung vista (God's plan of love for man), then life becomes tasty (we can really "eat" it with gusto). His saying to the disciples that they were the salt of the earth, implies that those who are disciples of our Lord strive to help others into an understanding of life, to the end that their experiences may become more palatable, and thus their daily grind transforms into a daily melody of joy.
