II Corinthians 4:5-7

"For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus' sake. For God, Who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us."

"I have written to him the great things of My law, but they were counted as a strange thing." Hosea 8:12

A parent may say to the very young one: you are not to play with matches! To that very young one, it means nothing more than a forbidding. He doesn't understand why: it is merely something he must not do. But in course of time perhaps he puts his finger into a candle's flame: incipient understanding is born. A few years later he might see some unfortunate one who has sustained severe burns to considerable areas of the body: awe of the flame increases. Years later, he may witness a house go up in smoke and perhaps people trapped inside. Even before the years of his maturity he may have arrived at an understanding of the "great things" involved in his dad's injunction: you are not to play with matches.

The foregoing is but a partial illustration of the "great things" involved in the numerous sayings of God to the children of man. For, in the simple illustration just presented, there are only material factors involved, but when God speaks, immensely more than the earthly is involved.
